The Uniqueness of Lake Manyara National Park

Tanzania July 07, 2026 3 min read

Tanzania's Lake Manyara National Park is a spectacular showcase of nature's diversity, earning its place as a true "microcosm of Tanzania's natural beauty". While modest in size, this small park at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment offers a concentration of unique features that set it apart as one of East Africa's most distinctive safari destinations.

A Park of Extraordinary Diversity

Lake Manyara is unique for its incredible variety of habitats packed into a relatively compact area. The park's landscapes range from lush groundwater forests nourished by underground springs and open grasslands, to acacia woodlands, swampy floodplains, and the expansive alkaline lake itself. These 11 distinct ecosystems support what is possibly the highest biomass density of large mammals in the world.

The Famous Tree-Climbing Lions

Perhaps the park's most legendary feature is its tree-climbing lions. This unusual behavior, first photographed here in 1968, has made Lake Manyara world-famous. Unlike typical lions, which prefer the shade of rocks or bushes, Manyara's big cats regularly climb acacia and sausage trees, often lounging 5 to 10 meters above the ground. While the exact reason for this behavior remains a mystery—whether to escape biting insects, catch cooling breezes from the lake, or simply stay dry during the rainy season—it provides a surreal sight of a 200-kilogram lion balancing on branches barely thicker than its thigh.

A Birdwatcher's Paradise

The alkaline lake is a magnet for waterbirds, making Manyara one of Africa's premier birdwatching destinations. The most spectacular sight is the seasonal gathering of thousands, and sometimes millions, of pink lesser flamingos, creating a breathtaking pink hue along the lake's shores. With over 400 recorded bird species, the park also hosts pelicans, storks, herons, and colorful bee-eaters.

Diverse and Abundant Wildlife

Beyond its famous cats, Manyara supports a rich population of large mammals. The groundwater forests are home to large troops of olive baboons and blue monkeys. The park also has a significant and growing population of elephants, often seen wandering through the forests and grazing near the lakeshore. Other common sightings include giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, buffalos, hippos, and various antelope species.

The Great Rift Valley Escarpment

The dramatic 400-meter-high escarpment of the Great Rift Valley forms the park's western border, rising steeply to create an awe-inspiring backdrop for the lake and forests. This monumental geological feature, formed millions of years ago, offers stunning panoramic views, making it a paradise for photography.

Unique Experiences

Beyond game drives, Lake Manyara offers unique activities that set it apart. Visitors can walk along Tanzania's first raised treetop walkway, experience the rare geological feature of hot water springs where the water is warm enough to boil an egg, and enjoy night game drives, which are rarely offered elsewhere.

Lake Manyara's blend of unparalleled biodiversity, rare wildlife behaviors, and breathtaking scenery makes it a compact gem that delivers an unforgettable safari experience.
