About Mount Kilimanjaro

Welcome to the Roof of Africa

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world, rising to 5,895 metres (19,341 ft) above sea level. Located in north-eastern Tanzania near the town of Moshi, this iconic dormant volcano is one of the Seven Summits and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Kilimanjaro is composed of three volcanic cones: Kibo (the highest, crowned by Uhuru Peak), Mawenzi, and Shira. Its slopes pass through five distinct ecological zones — cultivated lowlands, montane rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and arctic summit — offering climbers an extraordinary journey through changing landscapes in a matter of days.

Unlike many of the world's great peaks, Kilimanjaro requires no technical climbing skills. Any reasonably fit person with determination can reach the summit, making it one of the most accessible high-altitude treks on Earth. The main challenge is altitude, which is why we offer longer itineraries, professional mountain guides, and careful acclimatization planning to maximise your chance of reaching Uhuru Peak.

Home of Wonders Tours offers six distinct trekking routes up Kilimanjaro — Machame, Marangu, Lemosho, Rongai, Northern Circuit, and Umbwe — each with its own scenery, difficulty, and summit success rate. Whether you want the most scenic trail, the quietest path, or the classic "Coca-Cola" route, we have a Kilimanjaro adventure designed for you.

Our experienced guides, quality gear, and dedication to sustainable trekking ensure your climb is safe, memorable, and beneficial to the local communities who make your adventure possible.

Kilimanjaro Trekking Routes

Choose Your Path to Uhuru Peak

Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed via several distinct routes, each offering different scenery, difficulty, and traffic levels. Below is an overview of the six main routes we operate:

  • Machame Route ("Whiskey Route"): One of the most popular and scenic routes, climbing through lush rainforest, Shira Plateau, and the dramatic Barranco Wall. Typically 6–7 days with excellent acclimatization.
  • Marangu Route ("Coca-Cola Route"): The oldest, most established route and the only one offering dormitory hut accommodation. 5–6 days, moderate difficulty, and the most affordable option.
  • Lemosho Route: Considered the most beautiful route, starting on the remote western side of Kilimanjaro. 7–8 days, low traffic, and one of the highest summit success rates.
  • Rongai Route: The only route approaching from the north, near the Kenyan border. 6–7 days, quieter trails, and ideal for those who prefer a wilderness experience.
  • Northern Circuit: The longest route, circling almost the entire mountain for unmatched 360° views. 8–9 days with the best acclimatization and highest success rate.
  • Umbwe Route: The shortest, steepest, and most demanding route. 5–6 days, best suited for experienced and confident trekkers.

Each route leads to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. Whichever you choose, our team will guide you through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and the arctic summit zone with safety and comfort every step of the way.
