Ruaha National Park

Tanzania's best-kept secret and a stronghold for wild dogs

The Undiscovered Wilderness

Experience the Raw Beauty of Ruaha

Ruaha National Park is a rugged, remote, and breathtakingly beautiful sanctuary in the heart of southern Tanzania. It is the country's largest national park, covering over 20,000 square kilometers. Unlike the heavily trafficked northern circuit, Ruaha offers a truly exclusive safari experience. It is a place where you can drive for hours without seeing another vehicle, surrounded by baobab-studded hills, vast miombo woodlands, and the life-giving Great Ruaha River.

Ruaha is a park of dramatic transitions, where the flora and fauna of East and Southern Africa meet. This unique ecological crossroads results in an incredible diversity of wildlife. The park is famous for its massive herds of elephants, often seen in groups of over a hundred, as well as large prides of lions and impressive herds of buffalo. Ruaha is also one of the best places in Africa to see the endangered African wild dog, alongside healthy populations of cheetah, leopard, and sable and roan antelopes.

Ruaha National Park Wildlife and Landscape

Birdwatchers will be equally thrilled. With over 570 recorded species, Ruaha is a premier birding destination. The park is a stronghold for several species found nowhere else in Tanzania, such as the Ruaha Red-billed Hornbill. The Great Ruaha River acts as a magnet for wildlife during the dry season, offering spectacular game-viewing opportunities as elephants, giraffes, and predators congregate along its banks.
