Lake Manyara National Park

Famous for tree-climbing lions and spectacular flamingo flocks

The Jewel of the Rift Valley

Experience the Beauty of Lake Manyara

Nestled at the base of the dramatic Great Rift Valley escarpment, Lake Manyara National Park is a compact but incredibly diverse gem. Despite its relatively small size, the park packs a remarkable variety of habitats into a small area, ranging from dense groundwater forests and acacia woodlands to open grasslands and the vast, shimmering soda lake itself. Ernest Hemingway famously described it as "the loveliest I had seen in Africa."

The park is most famous for its elusive tree-climbing lions. While lions across Africa typically stay on the ground, the prides of Lake Manyara have famously adapted to rest in the branches of acacia trees. Though sightings are never guaranteed, it is a unique behavior that draws visitors from around the world. The park also boasts the largest concentration of baboons in the world, often seen in massive troops along the roadsides.

Lake Manyara National Park Wildlife

The lake itself is a birdwatcher's paradise. Depending on the water levels, thousands of pink-hued lesser flamingos gather to feed on the algae in the shallow waters, creating a spectacular pink fringe along the shoreline. The park is home to over 400 bird species, including pelicans, storks, and hornbills. For those looking to experience the raw beauty of the Rift Valley and its unique wildlife, Lake Manyara is an essential stop on any northern Tanzania safari.
