Nyerere National Park is a vast, untamed wilderness in southern Tanzania, formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve. It is the largest national park in Africa, covering an incredible 30,893 square kilometers. Named after Julius Nyerere, the founding father of Tanzania, this park remains far less crowded than the northern safari circuit, offering a truly exclusive and wild experience.
What sets Nyerere apart from other parks is the dominance of water. The mighty Rufiji River and its network of lakes and channels define the landscape. This allows for a spectacular variety of safari activities that you won't find in the north, including thrilling boat safaris and guided walking safaris. As you drift along the Rufiji River, you can get incredibly close to huge pods of hippos and crocodiles basking on the sandbanks.
Nyerere is a haven for predators and large mammals. It is one of the most reliable places in Africa to spot the critically endangered African wild dog, alongside healthy populations of lions, leopards, and hyenas. The park is also home to massive herds of elephants and buffalo, frequently seen gathering along the riverbanks. For birdwatchers, Nyerere is a paradise, with over 440 recorded species, including the rare Pel's fishing owl and the majestic fish eagle.
The best time for game viewing. Animals congregate around the drying water sources. The weather is cooler, and the risk of malaria is lower. Ideal for walking safaris and boat safaris.
The park turns vibrant green, and many animals give birth. It is an excellent time for birding and photography, though some dirt roads may become difficult to navigate. Great for budget travelers.
