Your Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival & Afternoon Game Drive in Selous / Mikumi

Your adventure begins with a morning flight from Dar es Salaam (or Zanzibar) to Selous/Mikumi airstrip. Upon arrival, your professional safari guide from Home of Wonders Tours will greet you with a warm Tanzanian welcome and transfer you into an open-roof 4×4 safari vehicle.

Morning & Afternoon Activities:

  • Game drive through the park – Search for elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, impalas, and buffaloes. In Selous, you may spot the rare African wild dog (painted wolf), one of the most endangered predators on the continent.
  • Picnic lunch by the Rufiji River (Selous) or under a majestic baobab tree (Mikumi) – listen to the calls of fish eagles and the grunts of hippos as you dine in the wild.
  • Optional boat safari on the Rufiji River (Selous only, additional cost) – glide past pods of hippos, basking crocodiles, and elephants drinking at the water's edge.
  • Late afternoon game drive as the golden African sun begins to lower, creating perfect lighting for photography.

Evening:

Check into your mid-range tented camp or lodge inside or just outside the park. Enjoy a delicious dinner under the stars, sharing stories of the day's sightings around a campfire (where available). Overnight at your chosen accommodation – options range from comfortable safari tents to river-view lodges.

Accommodation Options in Selous:

  • Selous Riverside Camp (budget-friendly)
  • Africa Safari Selous (mid-range)
  • Selous Kinga Lodge (comfort)
  • Rufiji River Camp (luxury)

Accommodation Options in Mikumi:

  • Camp Bastian Mikumi (mid-range)
  • Tan-Swiss Lodge (affordable)
  • Vuma Hill Tented Camp (luxury)

Day 2: Morning Game Drive & Departure

Wake up early to the sounds of the African bush – birds singing, monkeys chattering, and perhaps a lion roaring in the distance. After a quick coffee or tea, depart for your final morning game drive, the best time to see predators returning from their night hunts.

Morning Activities:

  • Sunrise game drive – Lions are often spotted lounging on rocks or drying roads, leopards may still be in trees with their kill, and hyenas are returning to their dens.
  • Explore different sectors of the park – Your guide knows where the recent action has been. In Mikumi, head toward the Mkata Floodplain, where large herds gather.
  • Stop at Hippo Pools (both parks) to watch these massive creatures jostle for space and blow water through their nostrils.
  • Breakfast in the bush – A classic safari experience: table set with linen, hot coffee, fresh fruit, and eggs cooked over an open fire (weather permitting).

Late Morning:

Return to the airstrip for your scheduled flight back to Dar es Salaam (or onward to Zanzibar). Home of Wonders Tours will ensure you arrive with enough time to connect to your next destination.

Optional extension: If you have more time, consider adding a day to explore Udzungwa Mountains National Park for hiking and waterfalls – we can easily customize your itinerary.
