Your Trip Itinerary

Full itinerary in Ndoro waterfalls

Morning: Pickup from Moshi or Arusha

Your day begins with a hotel pickup from Moshi (8:00 AM) or Arusha (7:00 AM). You'll travel by private vehicle through the scenic countryside toward Marangu Village, located on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The drive takes approximately 45 minutes from Moshi (15 km) or 1.5 hours from Arusha, passing through coffee farms, banana plantations, and small Chagga villages.

Mid-Morning: Arrival at Marangu & Chagga Museum

On arrival at Marangu, you'll meet your local guide and begin with a visit to the Chagga Museum (also known as the Chagga Live Museum). Here you'll learn about the history, traditions, and daily life of the Chagga people β€” the largest ethnic group on the slopes of Kilimanjaro.

Your guide will explain traditional Chagga homesteads, tools, clothing, and the famous Chagga underground caves used as hiding places during tribal wars and the German colonial era.

Late Morning: Hike to Ndoro Waterfalls

Begin your hike to Ndoro Waterfalls. The trail leads through lush banana and coffee plantations, shaded by tropical trees and alive with birdlife. At the entrance hut, you'll receive a wooden hiking stick to assist you on the descent.

The hike takes approximately 1 hour each way, covering about 5.5 kilometres return with an elevation change of around 212 metres. The trail includes well-maintained steps, occasionally steep, with handrails made from thick tree branches.

Midday: Ndoro Waterfalls & Natural Pool Swim

Arrive at the base of Ndoro Waterfalls β€” a stunning 30–35 metre cascade plunging into a clear natural pool surrounded by rainforest. Feel the mist on your face, take photos, and β€” if conditions allow β€” enjoy a refreshing swim in the cool waters of the plunge pool.

Swimming is best during the dry season when the current is manageable. The pool is accessible via a short scramble down the gorge wall, assisted by tree roots and wooden steps.

Afternoon: Traditional Chagga Coffee Tour & Lunch

After the waterfall, return to Marangu Village for a traditional Chagga coffee tour. Learn how locally grown Arabica coffee is produced using traditional methods β€” roasting, grinding, and brewing your own fresh cup while learning about the customs and daily life of the Chagga people.

Enjoy a hot traditional lunch at a local restaurant or family home, featuring dishes made with fresh local ingredients.

Late Afternoon: Village Walk & Return Transfer

After lunch, enjoy a short guided walk through Marangu Village, visiting local markets or craft shops. You'll then begin your return journey, arriving back in Moshi around 5:00 PM or Arusha around 6:30 PM.

Best Time to Visit Ndoro Waterfalls

Ndoro Waterfalls is accessible year-round, but the best months for hiking and swimming are:

  • June to October β€” dry season; best for swimming, clearer trails, and Kilimanjaro views

  • January to February β€” warm and dry; ideal for a refreshing dip

  • March to May β€” long rains; the waterfall is at its most powerful but trails can be slippery

  • November to December β€” short rains; lush green landscapes

The waterfall is at its most dramatic during and just after the rainy season, though swimming may be less safe due to stronger currents.

Practical Tips for Your Ndoro Waterfalls Day Trip

  • Wear sturdy hiking shoes β€” the trail can be muddy and slippery, especially after rain

  • Bring a swimsuit and towel if you plan to swim

  • Carry a light rain jacket β€” the rainforest can be wet even in the dry season

  • Bring sunscreen, hat, and insect repellent

  • Carry cash for tips, souvenirs, and drinks (USD or TZS)

  • Pack light β€” you'll carry your own daypack on the hike

  • Use the hiking stick provided at the entrance β€” it genuinely helps on the steep sections

  • Be cautious on the descent β€” the steps can be slippery, and the climb back up is more challenging than the way down
