Tarangire National Park is one of Tanzania's most underrated and rewarding safari destinations β a vast wilderness of rolling savannah, ancient baobab trees, and one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in northern Tanzania. Named after the Tarangire River, which flows year-round through the park, it becomes a magnet for wildlife during the dry season, drawing enormous herds of elephants β sometimes 300 or more at a time β along with lions, leopards, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and over 500 species of birds.
This 1-Day Tarangire National Park Safari with Home of Wonders Tours is the perfect day trip for travellers based in Arusha or Moshi, offering a complete Tanzanian safari experience in a single day. You'll be picked up early from your hotel, driven through the scenic Maasai Steppe, and spend 5β6 hours on game drives inside the park β including a stop for a hot picnic lunch at a scenic viewpoint.
Tarangire is famous for its elephant families β the park is home to one of the largest elephant populations in Tanzania β and for its iconic baobab trees, some of which are over 1,000 years old. The park is also one of the best places in Tanzania to see tree-climbing pythons and the rare gerenuk (a long-necked antelope). Whether you're a first-time safari-goer or an experienced traveller, Tarangire delivers an unforgettable day of wildlife and landscapes.

Price: From $390.00 / person
Your day begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Arusha (7:00 AM) or Moshi (6:00 AM). After a quick briefing, you'll travel by private 4x4 safari vehicle south through the Maasai Steppe β a vast, semi-arid plain dotted with acacia trees and traditional Maasai bomas.
The drive takes approximately 2 hours from Arusha (120 km) or 3.5 hours from Moshi. Along the way, your guide will brief you on the day's plan and share insights into the Maasai culture and the ecology of the Tarangire ecosystem.
On arrival at the Tarangire Main Gate, your guide will complete the park formalities while you enjoy a cup of coffee or tea. You'll then enter the park and immediately begin your game drive through the open savannah and acacia woodlands.
Tarangire is famous for its giant baobab trees β your guide will point out some of the most iconic specimens, including the famous "Baobab Tree" used in the film The Lion King. Keep an eye out for elephant families moving across the plains, and for the park's famous tree-climbing pythons draped across the branches of acacia trees.
Continue to the Tarangire River β the lifeline of the park and a magnet for wildlife during the dry season. Here you'll likely encounter huge herds of elephants β sometimes 100 to 300 individuals at a time β coming down to drink and bathe. This is one of the most extraordinary wildlife sights in Tanzania.
Along the river, you'll also see hippos, crocodiles, waterbucks, and buffaloes, along with dozens of bird species including fish eagles, kingfishers, herons, and egrets.
At around midday, stop for a hot picnic lunch at one of the park's designated picnic sites, which offer sweeping views over the Tarangire River or the open plains. Enjoy your meal while keeping an eye out for wildlife wandering past β this is one of the great pleasures of a Tarangire day trip.
After lunch, continue your game drive across different areas of the park β the Silale Swamps, Poacher's Hide, and Lemiyon are all excellent areas for wildlife. Your guide will use their knowledge and radio communication with other guides to maximise your chances of spotting lions, leopards, and cheetahs.
Tarangire is also one of the best places in Tanzania to see the rare gerenuk β a long-necked antelope that stands on its hind legs to reach high branches β and the fringe-eared oryx.
On the return journey, you may choose to stop at a traditional Maasai village (boma) for an optional cultural visit (small entry fee payable locally). Learn about Maasai traditions, dress, and daily life on the Maasai Steppe.
You'll then begin the return drive to Arusha (arriving around 6:30 PM) or Moshi (arriving around 8:00 PM).
