Overview of Zanzibar Spice Island Historical Tour – 2 Days Package

Overview

Welcome to Zanzibar, the legendary "Spice Island" of the Indian Ocean. This 2-day historical and cultural tour takes you on a journey through the island's rich heritage, from the ancient alleys of Stone Town to the aromatic spice plantations that gave Zanzibar its world-famous name. With Home of Wonders Tours as your guide, you will explore UNESCO-listed architecture, encounter giant tortoises, and experience the vibrant Swahili culture that has made Zanzibar a crossroads of civilizations for centuries.

Zanzibar's history is woven from threads of African, Arab, Indian, and European influences. The island was once the capital of the Omani Sultanate and a major hub of the Indian Ocean spice and slave trades. Today, its narrow streets, coral-stone buildings, and bustling markets tell stories of sultans, explorers, and traders who shaped its unique identity. This 2-day tour captures the very essence of Zanzibar – a place where history, culture, and natural beauty converge in perfect harmony.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Stone Town Tour & Prison Island

Morning – Arrival and Stone Town Walking Tour

Your adventure begins with a pickup from your hotel in Zanzibar City or from the airport/ferry terminal. Your professional guide from Home of Wonders Tours will meet you and take you on a fascinating walking tour of Stone Town, the historic heart of Zanzibar City and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Stone Town is a maze of narrow winding alleys, ornate wooden doors, and ancient coral-stone buildings that reflect centuries of cultural fusion. Your guide will lead you through the most significant landmarks, including:

  • The House of Wonders – The largest and tallest building in Stone Town, once the ceremonial palace of Sultan Barghash. Although currently under restoration, its exterior remains an impressive sight.
  • The Old Fort – A 17th-century Omani fort built to defend the city from Portuguese attacks. Today, it hosts cultural events and an open-air market.
  • The Sultan's Palace Museum – A former palace of the Omani sultans, now a museum showcasing royal artifacts, furniture, and photographs of Zanzibar's royal family.
  • Freddie Mercury Museum – The childhood home of the legendary Queen frontman, born Farrokh Bulsara in Stone Town. This small museum is a must-visit for music lovers.
  • Darajani Market – Zanzibar's bustling central market where locals sell fresh produce, seafood, spices, and traditional Swahili goods. The colors, sounds, and aromas are an assault on the senses in the best possible way.
  • The Anglican Cathedral – Built on the site of the former slave market, this cathedral stands as a powerful reminder of Zanzibar's dark history of the slave trade. The altar marks the spot of the whipping post.

Your guide will explain the history behind each site, sharing stories of sultans, slave traders, missionaries, and explorers like David Livingstone who passed through Zanzibar on their journeys into the African interior.

Midday – Lunch and Free Time

After your walking tour, you will be free to enjoy lunch at a local restaurant in Stone Town. Your guide can recommend authentic Swahili eateries serving dishes like Zanzibar pilau, octopus curry, and coconut-infused fish. Vegetarian options are also available.

Afternoon – Prison Island (Changu Island)

In the afternoon, you will take a motorboat from Stone Town to Prison Island, officially known as Changu Island. This small island, located about 3.5 kilometers from Stone Town, was originally planned as a prison for rebellious slaves, but the prison was never used. Instead, it became a quarantine station for diseases.

Today, Prison Island is famous for its giant Aldabra tortoises, some of which are over 100 years old and weigh more than 250 kilograms. You will have the opportunity to walk among these gentle giants, feed them, and take photos. The island also has beautiful coral reefs perfect for snorkeling, and a jetty where you can swim in the crystal-clear waters.

After exploring the island and snorkeling, you will return to Stone Town in the late afternoon.

Evening – Sunset and Dinner

As the sun begins to set, you will be taken to a prime spot for watching the stunning Zanzibar sunset over the Indian Ocean. The skies turn brilliant shades of orange, pink, and purple – a truly magical experience.

For dinner, you can choose to dine at a seaside restaurant in Stone Town or at your hotel. Home of Wonders Tours can recommend the best places to experience authentic Swahili cuisine.

Overnight: Hotel in Stone Town or beachfront resort (depending on your preference)

Day 2: Spice Farm Tour, Jozani Forest, and Beach Relaxation

Morning – Spice Farm Tour

After breakfast, you will embark on the highlight of your Zanzibar experience: a Spice Farm Tour. Zanzibar earned the nickname "Spice Island" because of its centuries-old spice plantations, and this tour is your chance to see, smell, and taste the spices that made the island famous.

Your guide will take you to a working spice farm, where local farmers will show you how cloves, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, pepper, turmeric, and many other spices are grown and harvested. You will:

  • Climb a pepper vine to pick fresh peppercorns
  • Peel cinnamon bark and smell its sweet, woody fragrance
  • Break open a vanilla pod to release its intoxicating aroma
  • Taste fresh nutmeg and its red outer layer
  • See clove trees, whose dried flower buds are Zanzibar's most famous export
  • Learn how local farmers use traditional methods to harvest, dry, and process spices

You will also learn about the medicinal uses of spices and see how they are incorporated into Swahili cuisine and traditional medicine. This is a sensory-rich experience that will leave you with a deep appreciation for Zanzibar's agricultural heritage.

Midday – Lunch

After the spice tour, enjoy a traditional Zanzibar-style lunch at the spice farm or at a nearby restaurant. Fresh fruits, coconut milk, and spices from the farm often feature in the meal.

Afternoon – Jozani Forest

After lunch, you will visit Jozani Forest, Zanzibar's only national park. This lush tropical forest is home to the Kirk's Red Colobus Monkey, a rare and endangered primate found nowhere else on earth. Your park ranger will guide you along forest trails where these striking monkeys feed and play in the canopy.

Jozani Forest is also home to:

  • Sykes monkeys, bushbabies, and tree hyraxes
  • A fascinating mangrove boardwalk where you can walk through the coastal forest and spot crabs, mudskippers, and birds
  • Over 100 species of trees and 50 species of birds

The forest is a haven for nature lovers and a perfect contrast to the spice farms and historical sites you visited on the previous day.

Late Afternoon – Beach Relaxation or Return

After exploring Jozani Forest, you have a choice:

  1. Return to your hotel in Stone Town or Zanzibar City
  2. Visit a nearby beach such as Kiwengwa, Nungwi, or Paje for swimming and relaxation

If time permits and you choose the beach option, you can relax on white sand beaches, swim in the turquoise waters, or simply enjoy the sunset before returning to your hotel.
