Overview of 2-Day Tanzania Family Safari – Tarangire National Park & Ngorongoro Crater

Why Northern Tanzania is Perfect for Families

Northern Tanzania is one of the most rewarding destinations on the planet for a family safari. The region combines accessible wildlife viewing, stunning landscapes, and a warm, welcoming culture that embraces travellers of all ages. Unlike more remote safari destinations, Northern Tanzania’s parks are compact enough to explore comfortably in a short timeframe, making a 2-day adventure entirely feasible without exhausting young travellers. The proximity of Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha means less time in transit and more time creating memories together as a family.

Tarangire National Park: The Kingdom of Elephants

Tarangire National Park is a spectacular introduction to the African bush, particularly for families. The park is renowned for its vast herds of elephants, which can number in the hundreds during the dry season, offering children the awe-inspiring sight of these gentle giants roaming freely across the savannah. The landscape is punctuated by iconic baobab trees, ancient giants that look like they belong in a storybook, sparking imagination in travellers of all ages. Tarangire is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 500 species recorded, making it an engaging destination for curious young minds.

Ngorongoro Crater: A Natural Wonder of the World

The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife destinations and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This ancient volcanic caldera, often referred to as a “natural zoo,” is home to an astonishing concentration of wildlife, including the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros—within its 260-square-kilometre floor. Descending into the crater is an unforgettable experience, especially for children, who will marvel at the sheer scale of the landscape and the abundance of animals visible from the comfort of a safari vehicle.

Your Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha – Tarangire National Park – Karatu

Your family adventure begins with a morning pickup from your hotel in Arusha at approximately 8:00 AM. Meet your friendly and experienced driver-guide, who will be your companion for the next two days. After a brief introduction and safety briefing, settle into your private 4x4 safari vehicle and depart for Tarangire National Park.

The drive takes approximately two hours, offering scenic views of the Tanzanian countryside and local villages along the way. As you approach the park, the landscape transforms into rolling savannah dotted with acacia trees and the unmistakable silhouettes of baobab trees.

Upon arrival at the park gate, your guide will handle the entry formalities while you stretch your legs. Soon after, you will begin your first game drive through Tarangire National Park. The park is famous for its elephant population, and it is not uncommon to encounter family groups of elephants—mothers with calves, young bulls play-fighting, and matriarchs leading the herd. This is a magical moment for children, who can observe these magnificent animals from the safety of the vehicle.

Around midday, stop for a picnic lunch at one of the park’s designated picnic sites. Enjoy your meal surrounded by the sounds of the bush, keeping an eye out for curious monkeys and colourful birds. After lunch, continue your game drive, exploring different areas of the park. Look out for lions resting in the shade, giraffes browsing on acacia trees, zebras, wildebeest, and a variety of antelope species. Your guide will share fascinating insights into the behaviour and ecology of the animals, making the experience both fun and educational for the whole family.

In the late afternoon, depart Tarangire and drive to your accommodation in Karatu, a charming town located near the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Check into your family-friendly lodge or tented camp, where you can freshen up and relax. Dinner will be served at the lodge, giving you a chance to reflect on the day’s adventures before a restful night’s sleep.

Day 2: Ngorongoro Crater – Arusha

Wake up early at your lodge and enjoy a hearty breakfast with views of the surrounding highlands. After breakfast, depart for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a drive of approximately 30 minutes to the crater rim.

Your guide will complete the entry formalities, and then you will begin the spectacular descent into the Ngorongoro Crater. The road winds down the steep crater wall, revealing breathtaking panoramas of the caldera floor below. This moment is often a highlight for families, as the sheer scale of the crater and the abundance of wildlife become apparent.

Once on the crater floor, you will spend the next four to five hours on an unforgettable game drive. The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the best places in Africa to see the Big Five in a single day. Your guide will expertly navigate the terrain, pointing out lions lounging on the grass, elephants grazing near the Lerai Forest, buffalo herds, and with luck, the critically endangered black rhinoceros. The crater is also home to flamingos, hippos, and a rich variety of birdlife, providing endless fascination for young wildlife enthusiasts.

Stop for a picnic lunch at the designated Ngoitokitok Springs picnic site, where you can enjoy your meal while watching hippos wallow in the nearby pool. After lunch, continue your game drive, exploring different areas of the crater before beginning the ascent back to the rim.

In the early afternoon, depart the Ngorongoro Crater and begin the return journey to Arusha. The drive takes approximately three to four hours, arriving in Arusha in the late afternoon or early evening. You will be dropped off at your hotel or at Kilimanjaro International Airport, depending on your onward travel plans.
