Hidden on the Kenya–Tanzania border and just 55 kilometres from Moshi, Lake Chala is one of Tanzania's most beautiful and least-visited natural wonders. This stunning crater lake sits inside a steep volcanic caldera, its waters glowing an almost unreal shade of turquoise and emerald green — believed by locals to be fed by underground streams flowing from Mount Kilimanjaro itself.
This full-day Lake Chala Day Trip combines crater-rim hiking, swimming in the world's clearest freshwater, kayaking, wildlife spotting, and cultural encounters — a perfect escape for nature lovers, photographers, couples, and anyone wanting a break from safari and trekking.

Price: From $120.00 / person
Your day begins with a hotel pickup from Moshi (7:00 AM) or Arusha (6:00 AM). You'll travel by private 4x4 vehicle south-east toward the Kenyan border, passing through Chagga villages, banana plantations, and dry savannah. The drive takes about 1.5 hours from Moshi and 3 hours from Arusha.
On arrival at Lake Chala, you'll meet your local guide and begin a guided hike along the crater rim. The trail circles part of the caldera and offers spectacular views straight down into the emerald waters below. Along the way, watch for vervet monkeys, baboons, and colourful hornbills. Your guide will explain how the crater was formed by volcanic activity hundreds of thousands of years ago and how the lake stays so full despite no surface outlet.
Descend to the lake shore for the highlight of the day — a swim in Lake Chala's crystal-clear water. The lake is up to 90 metres deep, clean, and peaceful. There is a small, safe swimming area with a gentle entry. Towels and changing space are available.
For those who want more, we can arrange a kayak or traditional canoe to paddle quietly across the lake. Paddling on Lake Chala offers unmatched views of the surrounding crater walls and a chance to spot fish eagles, kingfishers, and monitor lizards on the shore.
Enjoy a packed picnic lunch on the crater rim or at the lakeside camp, with panoramic views over the water and the distant Kenyan plains. Fresh fruit, sandwiches, and cold drinks are included.
After lunch, take a short guided nature walk around the camp area, or optionally visit a nearby Chagga village to see coffee and banana farms, or a Maasai homestead if you prefer a cultural experience. Your guide will introduce you to local customs, food, and daily life.
In the late afternoon, you'll begin your return journey to Moshi (arriving around 5:30 PM) or Arusha (arriving around 7:00 PM), filled with memories of Tanzania's most beautiful hidden lake.
